CHAMPS / LIFE SKILLS To prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life after athletics and graduation, Long Beach State is involved in the NCAA'S CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. Considering that the same qualities and skills necessary for a student-athlete to attain a high level of achievement in athletics can be applied to "Life" situations. The Life Skills Program was developed to help student-athletes not only make the transition from college to professional life in the work world, but also to make meaningful contributions to their communities. By focusing on "real life" skills and personal development, the Life Skills Program supports efforts of every student-athlete toward graduation and promotes respect for diversity among student-athletes. Life Skills also helps enhance interpersonal relationships in the lives of the student-athletes and assist him/her in building positive self-esteem. THE TANTALUM “CUP” ![]() CHAMPS/Life Skills has a new program called The Tantalum Cup, which is an competitive game that is played by all the teams. This program gives the student-athletes a chance to compete for points in various life skills categories. These categories focus on developing the individual, leadership, teamwork, supporting other athletes, and academic achievement. It’s used to promote competition and participation in various aspects of student-athlete life. The Tantalum Cup is a way for the competitive side of our athletes to be used towards something other than just athletic participation and more in developing their Life Skills. The winning team is announced at the end of the spring semester each year. The winning team for the second year in a row was men’s water polo. They will be honored with the perpetuating Tantalum Cup again and additional incentives. The event is sponsored by Tantalum Restaurant in Long Beach. NCAA Leadership Conference One of the many benefits of participation in the CHAMPS/Life Skills program is that each participating institution is eligible to send a student-athlete to the annual NCAA Leadership Conference. This conference brings 325 student-athletes from all sports and all divisions for a week of leadership training, team building, skill development, and strategic planning, preparing them to return to campus with a written action plan to implement a project to better their campus and/or local community, while addressing an identified need or concern. Each campus submits a panel four student-athletes, two men and two women, to the NCAA for consideration. A selection committee reviews the applications, which include a two-page essay about their perspective on leadership, and selects one of the four to participate in the conference.
