2005 Big West Co-Coach of the Year Sue Ewart, a member of the United States Golf Association Rules of Golf Committee, is entering her 12th season as the head coach of the 49er women's golf team. In 2006 the 49ers received their first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The 49ers finished second at the 2006 Big West Championships. This past year, 2007, the 49ers came in second place at the Big West Championships and junior Kay Hoey was selected as the Big West Golfer of the Year. Hoey advanced to the NCAA Championships where she tied for 46th place, earning second team All-America honors. A Long Beach State graduate, Ewart was elected into the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame in October of 2004. In 2005 the 49ers finished in second place in the Big West Conference with an extremely young squad, led by freshman Kay Hoey. Hoey earned Big West Conference Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors, and advanced to the NCAA Championships as a individual. Hoey placed fifth in the NCAA West Regionals and tied for 27th at the NCAA Championships. She is the first 49er to receive an invitation of the NCAA Championships. Ewart was honored for her outstanding season as the 2005 Big West co-Coach of the Year. In her 11 years (1997-2007) as the head women's coach at Long Beach State, Ewart has finished in the top half at the league championships eight times, including second place finishes in 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2007. She has coached 30 student-athletes who have earned all-conference honors, and current golfer Kay Hoey earned second team All-America honors in 2005 and 2007. Since the winter of 2004, Ewart has been a member of the USGA Rules of Golf Committee. The 10-member committee is responsible for the interpretations of the Rules of Golf. They meet at least three times annually and authorize new decisions and amendments of the rules and confer with the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland, on decisions and proposed amendments. Ewart was a member of the USGA Women's Committee from 1994-2004. While on the Committee her responsibilities included: International Team selection, Chair of the Women's Amateur Public Links in 2002, sectional qualifying events for the Women's Open and Women's Amateur. Certified as a USGA Rules Official, Ewart has also served as a rules official at the U.S. Women's Open, Women's Amateur, the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and The Masters from 2004-06. Prior to her role on the Women's Committee, she served a two-year stint on the Women's Mid-Amateur Championship Committee. Ewart was also a member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, as well as the Intercollegiate Relations Committee for the USGA. Ewart played on the LPGA Tour in 1981-82 in 24 events before regaining her amateur status. She has won the Long Beach City Women's Championship (1977, 1978, 1979, 1990), and has participated in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship (1977, 1991-92, 1995-98), as well as the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. She captured the Los Angeles City Championship in 1979 and won the Southern California Masters Championship in 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1995. In 1998 she was awarded the Women's Southern California Golf Association's Distinguished Service Award in 1998. Ewart is no stranger to Long Beach State athletics. She attended LBSU from 1975-79 on a golf scholarship and competed in four consecutive AIAW National Championship Tournaments. In 1987-88, she served as an assistant golf coach at Long Beach State under Marty Walker. Ewart was also a member at Long Beach State's home course Old Ranch Country Club. In 1997 she was inducted into the Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame. In the spring of 1998, she graduated from Long Beach State with a degree in Physical Education.
