LONG BEACH-- Lauren Machanis made 11 saves in goal for UC Irvine, including four in the third period, as the Anteaters (15-9, 6-6 MPSF) clinched the eighth seed in next week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships following a 7-4 win over host Long Beach State (15-14, 4-7 MPSF) on Thursday evening.

The 49ers, whose four game win streak was snapped, led 2-1 following a Lauren Sieprath goal with 2:20 left in the first period and 3-2 with 3:35 remaining on a penalty shot by Dayna Wawrzynski, before UCI responded with three straight goals to lead 5-3 on a Nicole Flacco goal with 6:23 remaining in the third period. Branwyn Lee though answered for the 49ers, taking a pass from Geraldine DiTommaso and scoring with 3:09 remaining to cut the lead to 5-4.

That is when Machanis went to work, making three saves with a one goal lead, as she stopped Wawrzynski from picking up her third goal of the contest and Sieprath from her second, as the Anteaters went up 6-4 with 32 seconds remaining on a Sarah Frost goal.

Kristen Stragier made 10 saves in goal for the 49ers, giving her 253 for the season, setting the single-season record for saves.
